ROUND BALE HAY COVERS
Hay growers around the nation are recognizing it makes no sense at all to spend thousands of dollars to produce stacks of hay bales only to let them spoil. Hay covers are an economical means to protect your investment and get the best return possible.
The first thing to know is your round bale stacking pattern and proper round bale hay stacking techniques. Properly stacked round hay bales will prolong the life of your hay tarp by providing a tighter fit and adequate run-off for rain and snow melt.
To calculate the suggested length of your tarp, measure your stack and add 4' to allow the tarp to fold over the stack ends. Allow an additional 3' to 4' length per tarp for overlap if multiple tarps are being used. Single row tarps are also available.
The Round Bale Hay Tarp Selection Chart is based on TRUE bale size.
We recommend you measure your stack to verify before ordering.
Secondly, it is important to decide what you will stack the hay on to prevent bottom bale damage. Some people prefer elevated asphalt, gravel, rock or other surfaces with drainage, or French drains to either side of the stack.
Here are some hay stacking tips...
1. Build a level area on which to stack hay.
2. The ground should slope away from the stack to allow for drainage.
3. Lay out baler twine on the ground as a guide for building a straight stack.
Introducing the new "Hay Saver" hay tarp.
The Hay Saver is made to fit any size round bale from 4' to 6' in diameter. No more worrying if the tarp is too big or too small to fit your round hay bales because the Hay Saver is 12' wide and comes in a standard length of 52' which can accommodate 8 or 9 6' round bales and 12 to 13 4' round bales lined up in a single row, one or two bales high. It is manufactured from our standard 7 oz silver/white 16 mil hay tarp material, and uses the same triangle/strap design of our popular Bull Flex hay tarp. Bales can be stacked two high to get twice the coverage for the same money!
2-2-1 round bale hay stack
Stacking round hay bales on their flat end is another stacking option. Tarps are typically installed white side up and silver side down to reflect heat away from the hay, however, in winter tarps can be installed silver side up to encourage snow melt. As you feed out of the stack the tarp can be stretched tightly back and retightened to provide continued protection. It is important to fold and tighten the tarp securely to prevent wind whip damage to the tarp.
3-2-1 round bale hay stack
Stack ends are left unobstructed to allow air exchange from end to end during the curing process except in high humidity areas when the ends are kept closed.
4-3-2-1 hay stacks
Stack ends are left unobstructed to allow air exchange from end to end during the curing process except in high humidity areas when the ends are kept closed.
Performer Hay Tarp vs. Bull Flex Hay Tarp
Two of the most popular tarps on the market today are the Performer Hay Tarp and the Bull Flex Hay Tarp. Both offer unique designs that give hay producers a variety of hay covering options. Below we discuss the unique benefits of both the Performer and the Bull Flex.
The Performer
The Performer round bale hay cover comes in standard widths of 20', 23', 25', 28' and 30'. The 48' or 54' length allows for a variety of stack configurations.
This sleeve style hay tarp is a superior hay tarp in all its design. It has a pocket down both sides with plastic pipe inserted and tied securly with ropes. The patented Super Cinch tarp tie-down system is pre-installed and used to pull the cover tight and keep it secure. This hay cover comes fully assembled for your convenience. The Performer Hay Tarp is designed to work with both round or square bales. The Performer Hay Tarp is available in a number of standard hay tarp sizes and custom sizes upon request.
The patented Super Cinch tie down system eliminates the need to tie and untie knots, making it the quickest way to secure and retighten your hay cover and protect it from wind damage. One person can apply an average of 450 pounds of pressure on each rope.
2" seatbelt webbing is pre-installed in a pocket on either end of the tarp, allowing the ends of the tarp to be cinched around a multitude of stack configurations, insuring a snug fit and protecting the ends from wind whip damage.
Each Performer Hay Tarp has a rain gutter which helps eliminate rain from running down the ropes and the sides of the hay stack, damaging the hay. All hay tarps are accordion folded, then rolled to the center and banded. This insures that you receive an installation ready product.
The Bull Flex
The Bull Flex hay bale cover is built "tough as a bulls hide" and yet is versitile enough to be the most economical choice for all you tarping needs. Cover everything from your round or square hay bale stacks, farm equipment, temporary shelter cover, wood pile or RV.

Your hay stack can be as long as you need. While smaller, independent stacks are common, our hay tarps can be overlapped to cover much longer stacks if desired. Multiple tarps on a single stack should be overlapped 3' to 4' and then tied down independently of one another. As your stack settles, retighten your ropes regularly to keep them "guitar string" tight. A loose cover will rip in high winds.

Hay Stack Underlayment
UNDERLAYMENT for hay stacks is designed to be used where separation of the hay from the ground moisture and contaminants is necessary to keep the hay stack in premium condition for sale or use at a later date. The hay tarp Underlayment material is a heavy duty waterproof fabric that can be staked down on the ground and then stacked on. Hay growers utilize a underlayment that is about six feet wider than the hay stack. This allows the fabric to tuck up on both sides about three feet.

Super Cinch Tarp Tie-Down
The Super Cinch tie-down device is one of the most amazing inventions for securing hay tarps . You simply feed the rope up through the eye and pull down to get the hay tarp tight. Side Curtains
Side Curtains have become a very popular option for large commercial hay operations particularly in the west where much of the hay must be protected in order to support the export market to Asia. Feed store hay, export hay, race track hay and straw, and dairy hay all benefit from the use of Side Curtains. In 2004 we did some tests and compared hay stacks that had the sides exposed to stacks that were protected by side curtains and it was amazing to see how much more money ended up in the pockets of hay growers who protect the top, sides and bottoms of their stacks
Underlayment
Underlayment for hay stacks is designed to be used where separation of the hay from the ground moisture and contaminants is necessary to keep the hay stack in premium condition for sale or use at a later date. Inland Tarp & Cover, Inc. offers a tested bottom bale protection system that works well when it is used correctly in the right environment. Be sure and always stack on an elevated stack pad so the moisture runs away from the stack.
